Dr Catherine Butler

With a background in social sciences, my work focuses on environmental issues and the processes of societal change that are central to creating a more sustainable future. Core to my research in this area is a concern to engage with the future as an analytical object, and understand the ways that futures are mobilised in order to attract resources, focus attention, coordinate activities and manage uncertainty.

I use qualitative and longitudinal research methods for their temporal sensitivity and the possibilities they offer for understanding change as an ongoing process.

I am working on three research projects that take distinctive futures-inflected approaches to understanding transitional processes relating to energy-system change and responses to extreme weather events.
